Exciting winter news for Tassie families: a temporary ice rink has popped up in MyState Bank Arena! Named SHIVER in a popular radio contest, Tasmania’s only ice rink will open to the public on 16 June 2025.
A three-year lull has followed the closure of Tasmania’s last ice sports facility at Davenport, much to the disappointment of amateur and pro skaters alike. It’s no wonder the Apple Isle’s winter sports athletes have been spotted putting SHIVER at MyState Bank Arena through its paces, ahead of the public launch in June.
SHIVER: The pop-up ice rink in MyState Bank Arena
Since the end of the 2024-2025 NBL season, the Glenorchy venue has undergone a wintery transformation not unlike that of Queen Elsa herself. The 30-metre by 15-metre rink, which was transported down to Tasmania from Cairns, took an impressive 30,000 litres of water to fill. It won’t go to waste, either—with plans to donate the ice melt to local farms at the end of the season.
In addition to public skate sessions, the SHIVER ice rink is set to host school groups, adults-only themed nights and private party bookings (with catering available on request). A rinkside café will also open to serve snacks and hot drinks.
When does Hobart's ice skating rink open?
SHIVER at MyState Bank Arena will welcome public skaters from 16 June to 27 July 2025. Sessions start from 9 am daily and run for 90 minutes. Kids must be five or older to skate.
How much does it cost to ice skate at SHIVER?
Kids from five to 14 years old skate for $22, while adults (defined as ages 15 and up) can expect to pay $29. Family passes mean four can skate for $90, covering two kids + two adults OR one adult + three kids.
All tickets include skate hire. Dolphin and penguin skate aids for littlies are an additional $5 to hire. Spectators can enter free, including under-fives.
Early bird tickets are available until 30 April 2025 for a discount of $5 on individual kids’ and adults’ tickets.
